We are hiring for an: Food Bank Program Assistant

Plateau Outreach Ministries (POM) provides social services for persons in the area of Southeast King/Northeast Pierce Counties commonly known as the Enumclaw Plateau.  Our mission is to extend hope and compassion through services like our food bank, emergency financial assistance, case management and our Thrift Store More Pennies from Heaven.  We are currently seeking a Food Bank Program Assistant to support the daily operations of our food bank, a cornerstone of our services.  This is a part-time position (20 hours/week). The role supports the Food Bank Manager and works alongside staff, volunteers, and community partners to ensure safe, respectful, and effective food distribution for clients.

 OVERVIEW: 

The Food Bank Program Assistant plays a vital role in supporting POM’s food access programs. This hands-on role requires organizational skills, initiative, compassion, and the ability to work with diverse populations. While the position centers around the food bank, the Assistant may occasionally help with other organizational needs as they arise, reflecting POM’s team-oriented culture.

Role: 

·        Reports to the Food Bank Manager.

·         Sort, weigh, shelve, and repackage donated food and hygiene items.

·         Assemble food bags for walk-in clients and DoorDash delivery program for clients.

·         Unload donations and food deliveries from community partners, donors, and vendors.

·         Monitor food supply levels and restock as needed.

·         Ensure food storage and distribution areas are clean and orderly.

·         Follow all food safety protocols and assist in program compliance.

·         Provide courteous and compassionate assistance to clients, staff, donors, and volunteers.

·         Help onboard and coordinate volunteers (orientation, training, task assignments).

·         Serve as backup to the Food Bank Manager when needed.

·         Maintain accurate records for clients, donations, and operations.

·         Assist with holiday programs, food drives, and seasonal distributions.

·         Lead volunteer groups when they come in for special projects.

·         Other duties as assigned to support POM’s mission and programs.   

 Additional Information:

This is a part time position the schedule for this position is: Mondays from 8am-3pm, Tuesdays 8am-1pm, Wednesday from 8am-1pm, and Thursdays from 9am-12pm; occasionally there will be work outside the listed hours and days including nights and weekends.  Additional duties may be added over time to best serve the organization.  Given the variety of activities throughout the week and over the course of the year, it is important to be a team player and be willing to assist where needed.  The employee may be expected to lift up to 40 pounds.  The employee is required to maintain confidential information.  The employee may be required to interact with individuals who are under extreme stress and individuals with special needs.  The employee is required to maintain professional composure and tact, patience and courtesy at all times.  The employee is expected to have a verbal and visible commitment to the Vision, Mission and Values of POM. 

 EXPECTATIONS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

·        High School diploma or equivalent required.

·         Experience in food service, nonprofit, or customers service. 

·         Cultural sensitivity and ability to engage respectfully with all. 

·         Must obtain a Washington State Food Handler’s card upon hire. 

·         Able to lift to 40 pounds and stand, bend, reach for extended periods of time. 

·         Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

·         Comfortable using computers and entering data with accuracy.

·         Valid Washington State driver’s license, reliable transportation, and car insurance.

·         Must agree to WA State Patrol and/or a federal background check.

·         Must be able to listen to and follow directions. 

·         Must be a self-starter with high integrity.

·         Must be able to work as a member of a team.

·         Bilingual in English and Spanish is a bonus.

COMPENSATION:

 The rate of pay will be dependent upon the employee’s education and experience between $20-$22 hr.  All jobs at POM are considered temporary for the first 90 days.  After 90 days have been completed, you may be offered the permanent position.  Permanent Staff who work over 24/hrs. a week receive paid holidays, vacation days, up to 3% match in a SIMPLE IRA, and a monthly medical stipend.  All staff receive sick leave.
